My kids love Nick Jr. If you don't have kids, Nick Jr is a channel with preschool age cartoons and kids shows like Umizoomis and Dora. We often fall asleep to the cartoons on Nick Jr. But, that's a routine we are no longer allowing in our house.
Let me explain. If it's been a few days since you tuned in at bedtime, you may want to know that things got a little make over the first of October.
Someone decided it was a good idea to run programs like NickMom Night Out, MFF: Mom Friends Forever, Parental Discretion with Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, and What was Carol Brady Thinking?
These shows are all part of NickMom and they are not suitable for children.
I'm not sure which program was on last night at ten, but the comedian said "son of a bitch" three times in less than five minutes. Obviously, any parent would quickly realize this programming isn't appropriate for kids and quickly change the channel. But what if you put your kids to bed at 8 then leave the tv on only to have your kid wake up between 9 and 11 to watch these programs? This is not ok.
Nickelodeon has something like four channels on Directv and out of those four channels someone thought Nick Jr was the most appropriate one to feature their "mother funny" programming? I don't think so.
Hey, Nickelodeon, I appreciate funny as much as the next mother, but I don't want this crap on your children's channel where my kids may inadvertently stumble upon it. I go to great lenghts to protect my kids from inappropriate programming on television. I never expected that I needed to monitor what was coming on the preschool targeted NickJr channel. Boy, did I ever learn my lesson!
I am all for "let the buyer beware" when it comes to most things in life. But, when you turn on the children's channels, don't you expect there to be kid friendly programming? It is realistic to have the expectation that it's safe, right? I'm not just being naive, am I? I mean, I've never ordered my kids a happy meal and worried they'd find a switch blade toy inside. I could be wrong, but I think this programming change-up was a great big ol' HORRIBLE idea.
So, here's what I want you to do. Go to the NickJr website and send a message asking for a return of the 24/7 kid friendly programming that we fell in love with. The site says they read each and every message received.
yes, Kaylee was on that channel the other night. I heard Breast milk and ran to the tv and it was not cartoons. It has stayed on our tv for years esp in Will's room all night.
ReplyDeleteI know! I kind of sat there watching for a minute thinking, this can't be the right channel...
