Central Hosts "Olympic Field Day" 2012

Monday, April 23, 2012; Hopkins County Central High School, Barnsley, KY.
Hopkins County Central High School students and faculty came together to support fellow students today in the South end of the county. Each year, Central hosts an "Olympic Field Day" inviting students with special needs to participate in a wide variety of sporting events and a game carnival. This year's event welcomed students from many of our elementary and middle schools.

Students arrived from their school by bus and entered Storm Stadium through the Big Red Tunnel, usually used by the Storm Football team as they head onto the field on Friday nights. Central students and faculty proudly gathered 'round to clap and whistle as the students made their way into the stadium. One high schooler even greeted students with high-fives.

After a quick welcome by Central staff, the student groups were met by a Student Ambassador and a group of Central student helpers for the day. The Ambassador helped guide each group of kids from one activity to the next. The students enjoyed events like golf, volley ball, kick ball, corn hole, soft ball, soccer, football, mock-rodeo, martial arts, and an obstacle course. The best part of the day, though, had to be the time spent in the game carnival. The children enjoyed a duck pond, fishing, balloon animals, face painting and many other carnival type activities.

The event lasted from nine until just after one when the buses arrived to bring students back to their schools to finish out the day. The students were happily exhausted after the "Olympic Field Day".

*Please note, I have no idea what Central uses that Big Red Tunnel for; I'm just using my literary license for that one!
